Description:
A simplified RC aircraft 2-stroke engine was modeled in Catia V5.The model consists of all mechanical parts from carburetor to exhaust manifold. The basic shape and component layout of the engine was inspired by existing RC aircraft engines. These engines were used as a design starting point; features were modified along with additional components to create a unique engine. Engine internals were designed in a top-down modeling method; bore, crankshaft throw, piston size and overall crankcase housing dimensions were first created in a main assembly, after which individual parts were created. This ensured that the crankshaft had adequate positioning and clearance when housed in the assembly. All other features were created externally in a bottom-down method, and subsequently added into the assembly. The entire assembly was animated using DMU kinematics.
